Hermione walked up to the Owlery, a letter in her hand. She tied the short note to her owl, and watched as her owl flew out the window. The bird soared high, towards the sparkling sun.
Hermione had scribbled (well, she had spent years perfecting her handwriting, so the note wasn't exactly "scribbled") down a few lines about her trip to Hogwarts. Her parents had told her to write once she arrived at the school. Hermione was glad to have sent the letter, because that meant one thing was finished. Not that she had a lot to do, seeing as how school had only just begun, but she still had a list of things to rember.
Hermione stared out the window a while longer, and didn't notice right away when someone walked up to the Owlery.

Ginny was walking into the Owlry to mail a letter to her parents. As she was going towards a school owl, she saw Hermione in there. "Hey, Hermione," she said with a smile on her face. Ginny had known Hermione for 6 years now and they got to become pretty good friends. "How are you," she asked.

Hermione turned to see Ginny Weasley. She had been friends with the Weasleys for about six years now. Hermione had first met Ginny's brother Ron on the train to Hogwarts in her first year, and became friends with Ron and Harry shortly after the three of them were sorted into Gryffindor.
Hermione smiled at the red head, the only Weasley girl in the family, besides Mrs. Weasley of course. "Hi Ginny. I'm good. How was your summer?"
Hermione had written to Ron, and Ginny as well. However, she always put their letters in the same envelope, and Ron hardly opened it, let alone read the letter addressed to him inside. Hermione assumed Ron left the letters unopened, and Ginny never saw them, for Ginny would have written back. Ginny wasn't exactly like Ron.

Ginny smiled at her friend. "Mine was good. We had Harry over for awhile. We tried having you over, but you never replied to our letters. Errol must have screwed up the post again. How was your summer," asked Ginny.
Ginny remembered all the times she had Hermione over for the summer and when they stayed up late just talking. Ginny never really talked to anyone except her mother at home. It was hard because her mother was the only one in the house that wasn't a guy and she wasn't going to go to her brothers for guy advice. It would be pretty humiliating.

"My summer was good," Hermione said. "My family went on vacation. I did get a few letters, but I didn't read them until the summer was nearly over." Hermione and her parents had gone on a trip to see other family. She had spent most of the summer with younger cousins and aunts and uncles.
"How is Ron?" Hermione asked. "I haven't seen him around yet." It was true. She had yet to see her friends. She wondered where they were, but was glad she'd found Ginny. She had missed Ginny over the summer. Other than Ron and Harry, Ginny was one of her closest friends, and she found it easier at times to talk to Ginny rather than Ron or Harry.

"How was your vacation? What did you do," asked Ginny wanting to know everything. "I don't know how he is. I haven't seen him and Harry since we arrived at school."
Ginny found it easy to talk to Hermione. Hermione always knew what to say at the exact right moment. And she always knew what to say to make Ginny feel better.

"My parents and I went to visit family," Hermione said. "What did you do all summer stuck with all boys?" Ron and Harry were Hermione's friends, but Ron was Ginny's brother. There had to be times when he got on her nerves. And being in a house full of boys all summer must have been boring, especially if only one was not related to Ginny.

"It was so boring. It was so boring that I even helped my mum clean and cook. But I mostly went on walks, studied, or was in my room," stated Ginny. "It would have been more fun if you were there though."
Ginny liked having Hermione over. There was always something to do when she was there, even if it was the most boring days of the year.

"I wish I had been there. I spent most of my time watching my younger cousins. They aren't exactly the best behaved children around."
Hermione was usually seen chasing after her cousins. They never seemed to sit still. She was constantly thinking of ways to calm them down, or give them something to do. After last summer, she realized it would be a long time before she had children of her own, if she ever did.

Ginny laughed alittle. "Well, if you ever want to get out of baby-sitting, just come over. We'll always welcome you. Especially me because I like talking to you," said Ginny.
Ginny always liked looking after little kids. She never got to look after any though, except if you count her brothers if they are acting chidlish. She liked telling them what to do. It was fun! She felt like she was her mother sometimes. And that just felt ackward.

And in stepped...
Ahriman. With a sealed letter in his grasp he partly limped into the room, his emerald eyes at once spotting the two students. Ahriman was a pretty attractive man in himself, and he knew this--though he had no ego to speak of. However... He was sure at least a few females at this school would become his fan club, or at least attempt to flirt with him. He was thin, with long raven hair that had a streak of white within it. Today his hair was draped over his shoulders, though he did mostly wear it back in a pony tail while working with students.
Ahriman bowed his head to the two girls and lifted his arm up into the air. "Don't let me interrupt your conversation.. Carry on." Gage said. At once a large silver white owl flew down and gently rested on his hand. He smiled and gently stroked her soft feathers, watching her nuzzle against his fingertips. "Fayln.. Take this to the St.Mungo's as quickly as you can." He whispered to her, holding her out to the window. "I'm counting on you.." Ahriman smiled at the owl who gave a low hoot and stretched her wings, flying out the window to leave Ahriman in the room with the two Gryffindor girls.
"Well then.." He smiled at them both. "I hope to see you both in my classes.." Pausing for a moment he looked over the taller girl and spoke again. "If I'm not mistaken... You must be Miss Granger?" He asked, a small smile forming on his lips once more. Then with one look at Ginny he chuckled. "And.. Miss Weasley? You hair holds the legacy of your family and its line." Gage said with another low chuckle, eying the girl warmly with emerald eyes.

Ginny blushed when she saw the teacher. He was new here and he seemed nice. "Yes. Nice to meet you, Professor," stated Ginny with a smile on her face looking him over. Ginny noticed that he was well dressed and didn't look that old to be a teacher. Ginny really didn't know him, but he seemed like he was good at teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts. Ginny was actually excited for a class. She wasn't going to tell anyone this, except maybe Hermione who mostly felt the same way she did about classes. Hermione was the only one of her friends that she knew could keep a secret. She appreciated that in a friendship and Hermione always was there. Ginny trusted Hermione alot. Ginny even trusted Hermione with her life.

Ahriman grinned. He wasn't that old, he looked maybe a bit young for his age, though he was only twenty four. Bowing to the pair of them he addressed them both again, noticing the way Ginny looked at him. The grin on his face curled wider as he spoke. "Well.. Don't let me get in th way." He bowed to them both again, walking to the door and giving a small wave of the hand. "I hope to see the pair of you in my classes, I'm sure you'll find them to your liking."
He called back behind to the two Gryffindors, making his way out of the Owlry and to his office, a long nap seemed indicated as he stifled a yawn behind his hand, emerald hues flickering half closed.

"Goodbye, Professor," Hermione called to the teacher as he left the Owlery. She then turned to Ginny. "He seemed nice. I can't wait to begin classes. They should be very interesting."
Hermione had discovered that Professor Ahriman would be the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher when she'd first arrived at Hogwarts. By the looks of him, he seemed to know much about the subject, but not so much that he seemed dark himself.

"I can't wait either," stated Ginny. It was weird, but Ginny was actually excited to start classes. The only person she knew that was excited about classes was Hermione. And only Hermione. Ginny continued to look outside the window wondering if there were any other letters for her coming later that day.
